Local History Talk 'Major Richard Heywood MC - Sefton's Unsung Hero' by Alastair Gillies In-Person
Alastair Gillies wrote a book on the ‘History of Methodism in Formby’. It was while he was researching for the book that he came across the name of Richard Percival Heywood for the first time. This led to a fascinating journey of discovery - Richard was an extremely gifted rugby (he had several English trials) and cricket player but also an incredibly brave soldier - during World War 1, he was promoted from Private to Major and won the Military Cross. Both amazing achievements. Richard was born in Bootle, then lived in Formby for a time, before relocating to Crosby, where he lived for the last 30 years of his life. Yet few people have even heard of him or know anything about him! So do come along and hear the story of a truly amazing man!
