Crosby Library - "Pre-Conquest England" Talk

Crosby Library - "Pre-Conquest England" Talk In-Person

Pre-Conquest England shed a great light on what used to be called “The Dark Ages”. After the fall of the Roman Empire, at a time when Europe fell into chaos and conflict, England was the first European country to produce its own scholarly national history, its own vernacular literature and durable central government based on written records. Its scholars and scholarship were renowned throughout Europe. In the fashioning of precious objects, both secular and religious and the architecture of its surviving churches, English workmanship was second to none. English missionaries and men and women of the church carried Christianity to much of northern Europe and even became heads of continental religious institutions.
