Crosby Library - "Soldiers on the Streets and Warships in the Mersey" Talk In-Person
In 1911 a national transport strike severely disrupted Liverpool Docks and to stem the unrest severe tactics were employed but the action of the dock workers started a process of change. This desire for change continued with the 1919 Liverpool Police strike for better pay and working conditions. This caused chaos in the city and the response again employed troops and tanks on the streets and a warship in the Mersey. The speaker David Hearn reveals the traumatic story that led to the unrest and the change that followed.
